In my struggle to keep myself from feeling scared and as if I'm about to be tossed into a meatgrinder, I have decided to return to my roots and give myself a second warrior name. I chose "Tepintzin" as my first warrior name when I went to Mexico in 2002, but "Lady Little One" just ain't gonna cut it for what I'm about to do with myself. I have thus chosen the surname Huehueocelotl (HWEH-hweh-O-seh-lotl) which means "Fire Jaguar".

I just have to tell you how brave I think you are. I love your new name.

Talking with some of my friends who went to the first Gulf War, I get the idea that this waiting before you go is the worse part. Once you are there they should keep you busy enough so you will not have time to worry.

so that's what Tepintzin means. I thought it was some kind of play on Stephanie.

Anyway, I'm rooting for you!

Actually, that's sort of what it is. I started calling myself "Teppy" as a joke when I was about 24. It's not a childhood nickname. However, it caught on. When I went to choose a warrior name, I wanted something that reflected "Teppy" and found that "Tepin" was a common Nahuatl name meaning, "Little One". The -tzin ending is analagous to the Japanese -sama.

I would have thought that Huehueocelotl was some sort of ocelot.

Same word for an ocelot as for a jaguar. The word for a jaguar is from a South American language; the Nahua didn't distinguish between the two kinds of cats. I rather suspect even an African lion would have been an "ocelotl" to them.

That is so awesome! Are these names a tradition?

It's a Chicano custom rather than a Mexican one per se.
