Yesterday Steve wanted to do something different and fun on a Saturday night, so we rounded up James and went to the local Indian casino, Sycuan.

The only casino I´ve ever been in has been one through which I was entering or exiting a hotel in Las Vegas. Still, as a longtime fan of James Bond movies, I´ve always wanted to be the dark and mysterious woman in the entourage of Goldfinger or something, sitting across the baccarat table from Sean Connery. So I shaved my armpits, put on my never-worn black evening gown, put on some makeup, and off we went.

Can we say...overdressed?

Now, in Las Vegas casinos, says Steve who grew up in them, usually have several sections. There are the slot machine sections where lots of Ma and Pa midwestern types go in their polyester and baseball caps, but then there are the more upscale blackjack and roulette tables, then finally the pai gow and baccarat. In Las Vegas, baccarat requires evening dress and French. Well, we walked into the ¨old casino¨ section, which was all slot machines and then one room for poker. Fortunately we ran into Raymond, who is 45 years in the hotel and entertainment industry and tour guide for the casino. This is the proverbial guy who knows everybody, and he trained half the staff, taking time to talk with all the new hires too. With his help we saw the other sections, with the pai gow and allegedly the baccarat (no game going on), the theatre, and various restaurants. That was interesting and he was great.

James was hungry, so we stopped in at the 24 hour steak & breakfast restaurant where there was nothing I wanted to eat, but that was okay. That was when we made the horrifying discovery.

SYCUAN IS A DRY CASINO.

What in the sweet Georgia Brown is THAT about? How can a casino of any sort make money without booze? How am I to be a Bond girl without a gin and tonic by my elbow? Las Viejas apparently does serve booze, so Steve is determined to head there next.

By then it was getting late, and considering how exhausted Steve and I were, we headed home after Steve and James played some slots. I didn´t, because slot machines remind me too much of experiments where lab rats press buttons endlessly hoping for a reward. I find it degrading and I won´t do it.

So we came out of there having spent money only on Steve´s supper and one slot machine. It was fun nonetheless, because seeing the casino and how it works was interesting, and it was fun dressing up.

Today, lots of work to do.
