(no subject)

There is something I want to do, (it's religious even) but they're asking me to renounce my Canadian citizenship in order to do it. I've called both the Canadian consulate in Los Angeles as well as the embassy in Washington D.C. and can't get a hold of a live person since my question doesn't exactly fit into the taped messages they have.

I feel like a bastard child, and I don't like it. Reading about dual citizens further revealed that I can't even use my Canadian passport to enter the U.S. if I've been abroad. Normally I only go to Mexico and back to Canada, so I can just use my birth certificate for that. So it looks like I can't even travel outside North America now unless I fly in and out of Toronto.

I really, really, REALLY hate being backed into a corner like this.

What, does it require security clearance or something? Doesn't make much sense to me, unless you're not getting the full story.

(Personally I'd hang onto the Canadian passport these days.)

A lower level security clearance, yeah.

Your field is theology, right? (I'm confused.)

I'm really picturing a '007 for Christ' scenario here....

Hey cool! Maybe she's really a ninja. Because ninjas flip out and kill people, so maybe theologians do?

It was something like that, yeah.

But essentially, the very lowest security clearances are denied to dual citizens.

WTF is their problem? I agree with an someone else's comment about hanging onto your Canadian citizenship. You never know when you are really going to need it to get the fuck outta here! So are you going to keep trying or are you just going to forget it?

I've left a phone message and a fax with the Canadian consulate in L.A. asking if there is an unexpected-to-the-Yanks way out of this.

[identity profile] zeonchar.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
unexpected-to-the-Yanks? What's that?

[identity profile] kishiriadgr.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping they'll say, "sign any paper you want, we just will ignore it." This has been known to happen.

That would be great! But somehow I don't think that would happen.

My History teacher mentioned last night about him being a dual Romanian/US citizen and how Romania asked him to be their ambassador and he had to refuse because he said the US Government won't allow you to work with any other countrie's government. Kind of relates to you in a way.
