(no subject)

I want to think this is a hoax or a joke, but I have a horrible feeling it's not:

Only in the United States. Only in the United States. More on this as I find more out.

Picked up from [profile] khandreia.

It was featured on Fr. Roderick's Daily Breakfast podcast this morning. Good discussion of why the whole 'End Times' thing is abhorrent to Catholics, as well.

I read a couple articles about it on a gaming site a couple weeks ago. I don't think it's a hoax.

They were taking pre-orders for it the last time I went into a Gamestop.

Do you think a call to the ACLU is in order? I'm happy to do it. As a Catholic I can certainly point to the abhorrent nature of a game wherein *I* would be a target, plus there's the whole "Catholics are not Christians" thing. As for the other groups, there'd need to be other people speaking up. Certainly the pagans are well-represented in this flist.

Hm, will direct Steve to this.

Last I checked, it had no definite release date, and no publisher. That smells of vaporware, to me.

Vaporware?

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
A game that never gets released.

[identity profile] kallisti.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
The link is down, but I could guess...

It always amazed me the level of anti-Catholic feelings in the US. "Land of the Free?" ah...maybe not.

I'm no fan of the Roman Catholic Church. I had big problems with them, what with their harbouring Pedophiles, like my former Parish Priest, and another Priest who was a councilor at school telling me it was OK for my dad to beat up on me since God said it was OK because I was supposed to do whatever my father said, and be punished if I didn't.

But there is a difference between the Church, and those who are members of it. And attacking the members is as hateful as attacking anyone else simply for their religion.

I think you'll find people like [personal profile] garpu, [community profile] glossolalia, [profile] adeodatus and myself have problems with those kinds of priests too. Our answer is to do our best to get such priests expelled and/or put in jail. Even my Sainted Mommy (TM) did a happy dance when Cardinal Law in Boston got fired.

Anyway, the link went down about five minutes after I posted it. Steve found the game on the Left Behind website, so it is real. The question is if it really contains the offensive comment described.

I find it highly ironic how Evangelical lunatics harp on video game violence as promoting immorality and violence and cruelty...and then they go and make a game like this.

[identity profile] duckflambe.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Every so often, a stupid fringe group tries to make a game like this. Normally they get a lot of hype on the news (which is what they want), but nothing really happens. Most of the time the game never even gets published.

The game engine I work on actual has a "no genocide" rule in its licensing because of A-Holes like this. Anybody know which engine they are using? Unless they are doing the core engine themselves (unlikely), somebody may want to know what somebody is doing with their license.

[identity profile] patgund.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't surprise me.

Personal take on it, this is to spirituality what Grand Theft Auto is to car racing........

(Chuckle) Of course as an ex-Catholic turned Pagan, I'd be high on the list of targets for these nutjobs

[identity profile] patgund.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Or worse comes to worse, create a patch so if a player does play the whole dominist side of the game, it reveals at the end that he/she/it was really playing on the side of the anti-christ.....

As you may have noted, I have lots of problems with "End Times" stuff, it's like hardcore porn for Fundies.

As for "those kind" of priests...I wouldn't blame the Church for them if not for the fact that they purposly hid their crimes by shuffling them around parishes, and it was a problem all over, not just Boston. Add to that the incidents in Alfred, Ontario, the residential schools...the decimation of aboriginal cultures the world over...the doctrine that the Jews were responsable for the death of Jesus...The Catholic Church has much to answer for...and make restitution for...but it doesn't make it evil, as the RC Church has also done many good things too...but it needs to change.

Here's part of the story about "my" parish priest, where I used to be an altar boy at St Elisabeth in Ottawa...When he took over as Parish Priest from Fr. Dunnagen, I felt there was something wrong with him, and I quit serving shortly thereafter. That was in the late 1970's. Here is part of a news story about when they finally caught him.

"Fr. Dale Crampton, sentenced to 8 months in 1987 after pleading guilty to indecently assaulting 7 altar boys. After his release from jail at age 51, he served on the marriage tribunal and retired in 1995. His case was one of the first in Canada to see the court order the church to pay $150,000 (Canadian) to his victims after it failed to act on a previous complaint and for not providing the victims with counseling."

One of the few things I agree with my dad about the RC Church is that they *need* to allow priests to marry...it won't prevent scum like Fr. Crampton from becoming priests, but it will help up the number a quickly diminishing quanity of priests, and probably improve the Church's reputation around the world. A friend of the family's is a priest who retired, and got married. He might be serving right now if they allowed marriage for priests.

Even my Sainted Mommy (TM) did a happy dance when Cardinal Law in Boston got fired.

I know its supposed to be a step down for the guy and in theory I can see it but I really wish I could get fired in such a manner. I wouldn't mind being canned and then named archpriest of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome. It understand he gets a nice monthly stipend and an apartment that has been described as a almost palatial. All with the burden of getting to lead the occasional group of pilgrims to sites across Europe.

Grrr ... that one is still a sore subject for me. I'm not a fan of VOTF but there is good reason to be a bit outraged.

[identity profile] adeodatus.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
They aren't a joke but, as [livejournal.com profile] garpu said, it still might be vaporware. They've a nice lil website with trailers of the proposed games that haven't worked for a while. All in all, I doubt their ability to produce a high quality, "best selling" PC game. Heck, even 12 year olds can (and do) code crappy PC games.

Still, I'm curious where they are gonna go with this idea and how they could pull off a bizarre Christian video game with killing/murder in the name of God. Talk about taking God's name in vain, Geez.

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
You should've been out there when the scandal broke originally. For some reason, I always hear about big events on NPR and Steve, who's up way before me, since I'm jetlagged. (It was 4 a.m. Fork Daylight Saving Time, and Steve (and the very bright thing in the sky they call "the sun" that we don't have in Seattle) woke me up to hear the report. I wasn't a happy camper.)

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thankfully in this case, most Christian-themed video games rarely make it to release, and if they do, they're more of a joke than anything. War in Heaven is one such notable example.

silly humans.

They could try coming out with a Christianized tweak on Sim City ... Feeding the poor, eliminating homelessness and other economic injustices, finding a way to get universal (and *good*) medical coverage and education for everyone. Things like that based on our real values. No, we have to have American evangelical versions of Al-Qaeda, Wahhabis and Jihadis.

If that game does come out in an online gaming version, I hope they have the option of choosing sides. I'd rather be a Catholic or Jew kicking the crap out of them online. ;)

[identity profile] garpu.livejournal.com 2006-05-31 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That could be a really cool game. (Or use the Pharoah/Emperor engine) Then again, I'd love to see a Sim U, a university simulation game.
