So today I went up to Miramar to do the "Shamrock Shuffle" 5K run. It was a "fun run" with no registration. It was a beautiful sunny day although I personally would have liked it a little cooler.

5K is shorter than a lot of runs I've done, so I wasn't worried. I didn't drink a whole lot of water immediately before the run because I didn't want to weigh myself down. Due to the dryness and warmth of the day, this turned out to be a serious error on my part. I was doing fine to the 2.5 kilometer mark (a little less than 1.5 miles) where there was water at the turnaround point. I didn't want to delay, so I turned around and started heading back. 2.25 miles in, the stomach cramps hit. If I am dehydrated I often get stomach cramps, so I recognized them for what they were and started walking. I was disappointed, but I know for next time that I need to wear my Camelback and drink from it about every quarter mile.

Drill this weekend. When I get back I'll aim for a 2.5 mile run on Monday and work up from there.

I think I need to get a camelback, I get really thirsty when running and don't like to carry bottles with me!

Still...at least you got out there and ran the 5K :)

Sipping water every quarter mile seems like a pain. Would drinking a lot of water before the race be enough to keep you hydrated? Or would that leave too much water sloshing around to be able to run comfortably?
