Los Alamitos Transient Billeting, or as I like to call it, home-away-from-home.

I arrived Sunday and will leave next Sunday. They claim the building is full, so I couldn't have a single room, but the place feels deserted. My room is an enlisted room with twin beds but I'm alone in it, so that's fine. Things didn't start off promising; the room had no overhead light, a noisy ceiling fan, and only one desk lamp and the light over the sink worked. As most people know, I need a lot of light to see since my pupils don't dilate. After 1630 on Sunday there is no staff here, so I left a message for the manager. She called me at 0745 the next morning (I was heading out to work already, so that was fine) and said she'd send up a maintenance guy.

Well, when I returned after work, they'd added more power strips so that both bedside lamps worked and installed a very, very bright overhead with a lovely and quiet new fan. I called and gushed, so that was good.

Today I was eating at Polly's Pies, which is an Orange County landmark near the base, having my lunch. An old guy who is a regular saw me and commented that he had been in the Army as well, 7th Cavalry. "Not with Custer himself, I hope," I said. Turned out that no shit, his company commander had been General Custer's grandson, also named Custer. The old guy and his wife eat at Polly's several times a week. I can understand that; although I don't think I've yet had one of the famous pies the food is really solid. On Saturday I plan on having their California Benedict for lunch. That's Eggs Benedict with turkey and avocado. I had it last Saturday of drill and it was pretty darned good.

Steve went up to a range outside of L.A. to go shooting. This allowed us to get together for dinner and some shopping. The shopping center that I go to at least once a drill to for dinner has a Target and Bed, Bath and Beyond. I have a new pair of jeans that'll spare me from having to do laundry. Steve went home with a shoe rack for inside our front door (finally!) and something else, can't remember what. He bought a carpet cleaner last weekend and used it on Sunday night and wants to enforce the "take off shoes" rule now that the carpet came out so nicely.

Big workout after work tomorrow and then Ghost Hunters. Gad I'm easy to amuse.

The California Benedict sounds NOM NOM NOM. I'll see if I can get Brian to make it for me (because he just loves poaching eggs, the silly guy).

I have to snicker at the "take off shoes" rule but, really, it makes So. Much. Sense to not bring indoors the dirt and germs that accompany you on your travels (also, isn't that one of the reasons why people are encouraged to keep their cats indoors). And anything that makes cleaning easier should not be ignored.
