So far it looks okay on my phone, but we'll see if that keeps up. Until then, I'm going to hammer LiveJournal more regularly.

Added benefit: My mom doesn't read here, so I can say mature things like "The Bible is stupid!" "Fuck!" "I like guns!" "White Trash!" and so on.

Oh yeah. She and Dad want to visit for four days in November. I'm trying to figure out how to get out of this.

Tell her that the US is invading Canada because we regard Justin Bieber as an act of war, so you have to go that month.

I'm with you on hating the flashy (read: stupid) new feature (read irrelevant distraction) on FB. Arrgghh.

As for them coming down to visit, would you be putting them up (in, say, your overcrowded home office, she says with a sly grin)? Or would they be in a hotel? Besides, both you and Steve have work that you can't drop at a moment's notice. Would that work to limit the exposure to tolerable toxic levels?

Steve and I are going to confer on this. For one thing, we don't have a guest bed and can't give them ours because the cats use our bathroom. I think a hotel might be the only option.

I think I'm going to have to come out of the closet about my paganism as well--I've got all sorts of deities, Virgins Mary, Santa Muertes and books about the occult that I cannot and will not hide.

Well, they're staying in a hotel. We refuse to get a bed for the back room because it's a home office and we need it to look the part. We'll get an inflatable bed (we borrowed Ma'am's when [profile] electorprince was here) for guests, but that's not good enough for them.

Steve says we leave all the heathenism and paganism out and they'll just have to deal.

Didn't see this before, because ... uh ... you replied to yourself.

Look, now that you're far more than grown up (meaning not hovering on the boundary), you have every right to express yourself (your beliefs and practices) as you wish. If she's on your turf, then SHE has to behave. I know, I know. What a concept.

Also, if you don't rely on her for financial support, then you can tell her (politely, mind you) where she can go. Expressing an opinion is one thing; badgering will not be tolerated. Still, good luck for November.

Well, it'll probably mean the end of these anxiety dreams where she and I start fighting over my spirituality. My parents no longer contribute anything to us financially, and we don't need them to. Plus she's known I've been interested in paganism of various sorts since at the very least the 90s when I had a bone carving of a mother goddess on my jacket and she said, "I worry about you and your goddesses." That was...1992? I told her I was nontheistic in about 2009, so none of this should be a surprise.

Whomever designed the new Facebook was a former Mircosoft employee. I am absolutely sure of this.

Maybe I'm weird, but I don't get all the hate for the Facebook revisions. It's not like they're charging us to upgrade, is it?

As for your mom...good luck with that. Tackling all the stuff head on may be the best solution in the long run even if it's really painful while it's going on.

No, but if they were charging us to "upgrade" we could look at the options and decide, "Meh, I don't need that" or "Oh, I'd use that feature all the time," and reach for the credit card.

I'm thinking that head-on is going to be the only way to go. YES Steve is a Norse Heathen. YES I identify as pagan, although my spirituality is complicated. We're grownups, go watch EWTN at home.

Oh how I wish I didn't know what you were talking about.

Coincidentally, I have no idea how you stand having her added on Facebook. Not for all the money in the world would I add my parents there.

It would have caused more issues to have turned down her Facebook invite. Unlike you, my parents are on the east coast while I'm on the west, and it makes a number of differences.

Can you make a filter for her? I've got my boss added for similar reasons, but she ain't seeing anything I post.

Ya, I could do that. I was only peripherally aware that could be done.

I'm lucky in that my mother is scared of Facebook and suspicious of the Internet. She won't be signing up for Facebook any time soon.
