First, sleep. All three mornings. Yay.

We got together with Todd and Lourdes on Saturday and drove up to Pala. It turned out there was no recreational shooting that day because there was a match going on. We decided that Pala is a good place to just hang out, though. We went to the buffet again, then we retired outside for the inevitable cigars. After a while, I took Lourdes to the gift shop so Steve and Todd could have some guy-talking. I came out of the gift shop with two Tommy Bahama shirts on sale for 70% off (TB shirts go for $167 easy) and a really nice cobalt glass mug with bears on it. They were going to see The Screwtape Letters (>_<) on stage that evening, so Steve and I just sort of cooled our heels at home.

Sunday was another quiet day. Our other shooting partners were snowed in in Julian, in the mountains northeast of San Diego where they live. We had our kindred meeting in the evening and had a nice enough time. Steve and I had dropped $154 on booze at BevMo, one bottle of which was a gift for someone who got Steve some cases. We took a bottle of Akvavit, made in Steve's family's hometown of Aalborg, Denmark, to the meeting, where the topic was the Nine Noble Virtues and the lesser-known Code of Nine. The Code of Nine is something I'm going to photocopy for new soldiers because it's very appropriate.

Today I met with [community profile] antipodes and her family. Her daughters are 8 and 6, and 6-year-old Beth wants to be a soldier or a firefighter. Antipodes tells her she can do both, and I said yes, this is true. Since 8-year-old Olivia sent me letters in Afghanistan, and Beth wants to be a soldier, I met them all at Denny's in my uniform. The girls found that very neat, and I gave them PT t-shirts (I have many). After breakfast with them and Anti's partners Sean and Jane, I took her food shopping since they had a hotel suite with full kitchen. This meant Sprouts and !!!Pancho Villa!!! where hot tortillas and lots of Mexican foods were purchased for consumption during the week. After that she and I retired to University Avenue where we went to Vintage Religion, Controversial Bookstore, and Claire de Lune. Very good time, and we must do it again.

Steve is off judging Moot Court, so I'm at home, starting on "Toll the Hounds". Locke Lamora is going to have to wait a little bit.

Ohhhhhh. Akvavit. I'm having nostalgic withdrawal symptoms. I remember a few exquisite dinners (along with much alcoholic sampling) at The Copenhagen Room, in the basement at the Danish Food Centre, through the 70s.

I think what you did for your friend's daughters (wearing your uniform and giving them PT shirts) was wonderful. Yay, you. \0/

Akvavit is flavoured with caraway seeds, so eeyew. In my opinion.

Not all of it is. I just visited their site (and had to supply my country and date of birth, lol). However, considering that the "most important" of the three fathers of the Aalborg brand was from Poland, I'm not surprised by the heavy emphasis on caraway. OTOH, I never knew there were akvavit "bases" (for lack of a better word) merely waiting for the consumer to add home-made infusions.

I think one of my faves used to contain juniper.

Just another entry by you that I thoroughly enjoyed, it broadens horizons.

Not a fan of The Screwtape Letters? It's a book I'm always meaning to read.
