The ninth volume of the Malazan Book of the Fallen is sheer misery. The first 75% of the Book doesn't need to be there, since it front-loads dozens of new and ultimately irrelevant characters. The violence is also unusually disturbing. The tenth book, The Crippled God, better make up for my suffering.
