Badira was out of Tapazole (medicine for her thyroid, she has been hyperthyroid for years) so I went to Tijuana to see what deal they could give me. Also, I object to the fact that my birth control pills (which I take for PMS and cramps) cost $25. I had my photos from Mexico printed out, but didn´t have my friends´ postal codes, so south of the border I went.

Also, from the ¨I am pond scum¨ department, I forgot my niece´s birthday. She is 5. I can feel the negative vibrations emanating from my mother from the East Coast.

As luck would have it, I forgot the tapazole bottle with the prescription on it. Then I blacked out on what the cat´s dosage is. If it weren´t for the fact that the monster is out of medicine, I would have postponed. I ended up getting 120 days´ supply for $20, which is not only a bargain, but an outright steal. My pills are $6 a pack, a savings of $19. And then the drug companies wonder why Americans cross borders for their medicines!

At the post office, I was told that it doesn´t matter if you put on a postal code or not. So when the letters get to the Tlaxcala P.O., one of the clerks will probably have his 8-year-old kid brother run across the zocalo to hand it to the mariachis at least.

I looked around for a doll or a little leather purse or something for my niece, but nothing struck my fancy. As I was heading back towards the border, I came to the bridge where all the people have their tables, selling stuff. An older fellow in his 60s was selling a lot of cheap silver jewellry which was even stamped ¨alpaca¨. I said I was looking for something for a little girl, and he offered me two bracelets for $5. Done. We started talking and like most people, he marvelled at my Spanish. I told him the facts; Latino, 2 months in Puebla, Poblana grandmother. He liked me enough that he gave me a ring as a gift, just a plain silver band that I´m wearing on my thumb.

The line at the border was atrocious. They are concentrating more on drugs than terrorism, which is good because there has never been any terrorist movement through San Ysidro. However, drugs go through all the time. I told the truth when asked if I had medicines, but it meant that I had to go to the side, let them paw through my bags, explain what tapazole was, etc. They let me keep it, but scolded me mildly and said to bring the bottle next time. I will, Dad.

Anyway, so now I can send this off to my niece and it´ll all be happy, and Badira can keep pooping on schedule (without her medicine she gets bunged).
