The Orange County Fair is really cool. Steve told me going to the fair is one of his favourite things in the world, and I was sorry we couldn't spend more time there. (It took me 3 hours to get to OC from SD, due to sluggishness at the Rubio's at UCSD where I was returning some books and a comedy of errors trying to find gas.) It's the White Trash Zoo, but that in itself is amusing as heck. My favourite White Trash exhibit was a rail-thin blonde woman in a short black sheath dress with a rose pattern on it and a cowboy hat, teetering drunkenly on her high heels. Haha! Oh, I wanted to shove her.

We each paid $12 for the concert tickets--and found that Fair admission was INCLUDED. So this ended up being a $5 show! Gene Loves Jezebel were a joke. They were still trying to be Rock Stars, dressed in the same clothes they wore in the 80s, pacing around the stage and pretending they weren't an opening act. I commented to Steve, "I knew them when they were glam. Now they're just pathetic."

Berlin, on the other hand RULED! They were visibly happy to be there, they have a new album out, and Teri Nunn was having a blast. She flirted, she danced, she got on one lucky fellow's shoulders and walked through the crowd, very far from us unfortunately. They did a version of "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel that started off iffy but found its land legs around the first chorus, and then was a neat improvisation on what is far from my favourite Gabriel song. They did "Metro" which got everybody singing along and dancing. We were astonished that she sang "Take My Breath Away" because I always heard they hated that song and wouldn't do it. They closed with "Sex" where they had fun again.

I don't know the work of the Psychadelic Furs as well as I should, but I recognized at least 4 songs though I don't know the words. It was about the 4th time Steve had seen them. Like Berlin, they seemed to have the attitude of "This is us, but 20 years later," which Gene Loves Jezebel just couldn't seem to admit. So the lead singer was dressed in a black button down and slacks with an overcoat he shed during the concert, but he didn't try to pretend he was a 20-something Goth. The music isn't dated at all, but still dark and rich and moody and we're just going to have to get copies again.

The whole concert lineup for the OC Fair is really good and obviously diverse, including Reba McIntyre, La Fiesta Mundial del Mariachi, Don Henley, and a really expensive ZZ Top show though Don Henley is the priciest at $95. (You mean people like him that much?)

In contrast, the biggest act at SD is...Melissa Etheridge in a triple bill. (Blows a paper party horn.)

And you thought the fair was bad. I live in a town whose anthem is "Pretty Fly for a White Guy."

You forgot to mention

That the reason that Berlin was so pumped up was that it was a homecoming show! They mentioned that they were from OC, and wanted to thank all the fans that kept them going through the years.
