Pimping this movie....
Aug. 5th, 2004 08:18 amIRON MONKEY.
I just saw this film last night via Netflix. I cannot praise it enough. A little background: Steve and I hated "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The simple reason was that for a movie where people routinely flew around on wires, it clearly considered itself and Important And Serious Piece of Cinema. It was long, ponderous, and very impressed with its own Lyric Quality and...ah, you get the picture.
Iron Monkey is 85 minutes and is perfectly aware that it's a movie where people fly around on wires, so it acts accordingly. The plot is fun; Scarlet Pimpernel in China a few hundred years ago. Action starts immediately, there's plenty of comedy, and the fight scenes are jaw-dropping. Women and kids are well-represented as martial artists. End-to-end entertainment, which is what a martial arts film should be, yet not at all cheesy. Thumbs up!
