shadowcell, I expect you to make good and gratuitous use of it!
We drove up to Orange County today. We stopped off to say Hi to Steve's best friend Tony who was staffing a Jim Grey for Senate table for the Libertarians. The fellow he was working with was a complete and total asshole; immediately he started saying that he'd staffed a table in Santa Monica where there were "all kinds of gays and transexuals!" I icily told him my cousin was one of those Santa Monica gays, that he's lived their for about 20 years with his husband, thank you very much. We took a stroll down the pier with Tony and Steve told him to inform Jim Grey not to use that guy at the table anymore.
On the plus side, looking over the Huntington Beach pier I saw pelicans, seals, and dolphins. I've never seen dolphins in the wild before and am a big opponent of having them in captivity, so that was pleasant. Hard to be mad when you're looking at wild dolphins.
After that we went to Virgin so I could use my gift cert. I walked out with The Big Lebowski and a 2-CD collection of chill jazz. After that we stopped at Borders in Irvine Spectrum so I could finally walk out carrying a book on cacti and succulents. Hurray! It has a nice photograph of how to do a cactus graft, so I'll be doing that in the next couple of weeks since the root stem of one of my moon cacti is dying. I need to get another cactus to serve as root stem first which means...adding more cacti to the Hanging Gardens. Yay!

Date: 2004-10-10 09:15 pm (UTC)I've always heard it's the Republician bastion in the People's Republic of California. The local airport is named after John Wayne. It's like a small part of Texas on the west coast. I'm not surprised that homophobic asshole was probably from there.
Big Lebowski, great movie! One of my RL/LJ friends is a big Coen brothers fan and constantly makes riffs and fan art involving the Dude.

Date: 2004-10-11 08:41 am (UTC)What was unexpected is that Mr. Phobe is a Libertarian. Libertarianism is all about "Do what you want as long as you don't do it in the street and frighten the horses." Homophobia or criticising another's "lifestyle" (I hate that word, especially when it's in connection to being gay, which is not a lifestyle any more than being black is) is normally very alien to the Libertarian mind.
