On late-night taco places
Apr. 3rd, 2005 09:00 amI was originally thinking of starting a project of trying and cataloging as many 24-hour or late-night Taco places as I could try. I've decided not to knock myself out doing this anymore after 4 bad meals including one that made me sick. Here are my findings to date. I'll end up trying more, but unless they are either hellishly bad or divinely good, I'm not going to make a real effort.
Aiberto's (University & 42nd, City Heights) Bad food, and it made me sick as a dog.
Sombrero's (Mission Gorge Road) Nice clean newly-renovated store and my food had no taste whatsoever. Tepid salsa couldn't liven it up.
The place across the street (can't remember the name offhand, it's by the Arby's) is somewhat better. I've eaten there twice and haven't hated it, although the food is often very under-seasoned. Salsa helps.
Filiberto's (University Ave) I actually don't think this is a Fili-B's anymore, but it's still okay. The pollo asado is peppery and well-mixed with guacamole and pico de gallo. Window service only, and it's fast. The one in Linda Vista is no longer open until midnight anymore, but it's better and the menu is much more extensive.
Cotija (Fairmount Ave above Poplar, below University) is only open late on Fridays and Saturdays and everything is good. The pollo asado is to die for and sells out earlier in the day. I also had shrimp enchiladas last night that had a lot of shrimp in them and the filler was cheese, not rice.
Valentine's on Market at 9th (I think) in Downtown is open "late" meaning it was doing business at 11 pm on Friday. The food is very good with lots of vegetarian options and the restaurant itself is quite pleasant. Dirt cheap, too.
La Posta on Washington is the uncontested ruler of the 24 hour taco places. If you eat beef and pork you'll do fine; the carne asada is famous and my friends make special trips just for it. The pollo asado and shredded chicken is pretty good too. No seafood. If you order chips and guacamole, be prepared for leftovers as the serving is huge.
Buen provecho!
