Because raw milk gives me a hard time, I put soymilk on my cereal in the morning. Today as I sat on the couch watching CNN with cereal bowl in hand, a certain little girl came up beside me and started pushing her little grey nose into it. It seems that SOMEONE has been teaching her that begging is acceptable behaviour from cats. Who could have taught her such a thing? Who COULD it be? When I gave her the bowl after I was finished, to show her that it was soymilk and not the cow's milk she was anticipating, she still took a few sips from it. She also was interested in the pear I was eating yesterday afternoon. Health conscious cat? Time will tell.

We've been forking out more money than we wanted. Steve has proved terribly allergic to the litter we've been using for years. The difference is that while Badira always got in the box, did what she came to do and got out, the Tsaritsa is an archaeologist. She'll dig for half an hour straight, because if she can find some ancient artifacts for her Imperial Brother's Reichsmuseum (sp?), she's onto it. This leads to two things; pounds of litter on the floor and a cat covered in litter dust. She would then go and snuggle with Steve, where the dust and the perfume in the litter made him sneeze and cough.

So we've bought a covered litter box with a door and invested in a wheat-based litter that is low dust and free of fragrance. This is the first time we've ever used anything like this because my only experience with a covered box was Dennis refusing to use it because he was a claustrophobic cat.

In the evening, Steve's friend Tony came down. Tony's birthday is the 26th, so we all went to Dave & Buster's for a bit to celebrate. Good time was had, not a lot to say about it.

Finally, what the hell is going on in Toronto? The shooting last night was bad enough, but the CBC says that was the 52nd gun death in the CITY alone. Usually Toronto gets 52 homicides or so a year, but to have this only be the shooting deaths? Since Canada has no "right to bear arms" I see strict measures ahead.

I used a wheatbased litter for a while and found that despite my containment measures it would get distributed over the rest of the apartment (Lovelace is also an archeologist at times). I'm trying the pine sawdust pellet litter from Trader Joe's now and that seems to stay put better, and the pinewood scent provides a little more odor coverage.

Steve is already saying that he can smell cat pee, since the box is in the back hall by his bathroom. I haven't been back there but will monitor the situation; I will NOT be a house that smells like a catbox.

There are other pine litters than Trader Joe's, which is a good thing because I don't get out in that direction often. I like Hillcrest but rarely go since there's no easy way to get there and once there, you have to do battle for parking.

I gotta say, I tried the pine pellets, and I really hated it. I don't think the cat liked it much either(she didn't bury her poop,) but I found it supremely annoying to handle. It could me my mode of litterbox maintenance, which is to scoop any poop and litter that's got pee on it as soon as I see it, and pull up any wet layers of newspaper (and then change the whole thing when I run out of dry layers.) It was hard to brush aside the dry pellets to get to the disintegrated peed on pine. Leaving it there to sift to the bottom as recommended made the area smell like a barn and pee.

Gives a bit of credence to the "give everybody a gun" argument that the Swiss employ, but that's an awfully drastic step to take. I say invest in crossbows.

Reichsmuseum is correct. If ever in Amsterdam, they have a killer one. ^_^

Actually, there was a very uncool crossbow homicide in Ottawa about 10 years back. Alienated loser guy shot his successful ex-wife to death right there on the street. As I was gainfully employed and separated from an alienated loser guy of my own, it gave me uncomfortable pause.

i remember him.....

i seem to remember offering to assist with the problem somewhere along the way.... [while looking into kevlar and chainmail for you]

crossbows do a lot of damage at fifty feet.

ugh... so obsolete yet so messy!

Rival gangs. Cops believe they know which ones they are. And, of course (note my sarcasm), the place to hold a shootout is outside a store at Yonge & Elm in broad daylight!

God. Sometimes I hate almost everything (bad, that is).

Ciao from the (former) city of sanity,
H.

That was Toronto's 78th homicide this year. I'm trying to find the stats for San Diego, but I'm thinking they're about the same. What's scary is that San Diego's homicide rate might end up being *lower*. They'll probably release the numbers January 1.
