Steve has been speculating, with some reason, that our Imperial Siblings are not in fact related at all. The Kaiser is probably a Russian Blue with some Chartreux thrown in (he has the right eyes and size) but I think that the Tsaritsa might be a Korat:

She can't possibly be a Russian Blue because her skin is pink, not blue. *His* skin is blue. She also looks like the cat in this photo.

Prince Louis of Battenberg was of the morganatic branch of the Hesse family, the ruling house of the Duchy. Because he came from a secondary branch, in spite of blood ties the title "Prince" was nonroyal, which meant he or any of his progeny could never inherit the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Perhaps your Tsaritsa is of the serene line of her lineage, and gets to hold title but no land. She or one of her offspring would have to marry into the royal side of the house to see any power.

Actually, what happened was this. She was married at a young age to the Tsar, but alas, he was interested only in the Imperial stableboys. He died, leaving the Tsaritsa without issue, so his younger brother turfed her out on his ascension to the throne. She had no choice but to return to her brother's home and protection. This is why she's so reserved and sets her attention to her archaeological pursuits; the poor thing is just too embarrassed!
