What motivated you to pursue a PhD, and why did you choose your particular dissertation topic?

I decided to go for the PhD because I never do anything in a small way, and if I was going for the master's I was taking higher ed all the f'n way.....

The topic is a follow up on my master's thesis, on Black Virgins. I'm fascinated by the Virgin Mary and by Mexico, so it was a natural.

Why did you move to Canada in the first place?

For all the same reasons I wish I were there now. I didn't like life in the United States and taking a Canadian Studies class showed me that Canada and I tracked pretty well. Then anime fandom got me a network of close friends (including Michael T., we hit it off immediately), places to crash, and a boyfriend so when I got laid off from my job I said, "It's time," and I left, taking Badira with me.
