When I was a kid, my family had a copy of H.W. Janson's "History of Art", a big white hardcover with a photo of the famous bust of Nefertiti on the dust jacket. I was fascinated by this book and must have read it dozens of times. I particularly recall a sculpture on the side of a cathedral of a medieval noblewoman named Uta and a colour photo of a modern art representation of an old man in a nursing home with a goldfish bowl for a head.
There was also a book in my school's library called "Strangely Enough" which many of my friends who are into the supernatural and paranormal might recall. It was just a collection of allegedly true stories, maybe a page and a half long. I read that one over and over too.
Well, I finally decided to stop being so stupid. I've been looking at http://www.abebooks.com 's listings for Janson's book. I was thinking about just waiting until I could plunk down $60 for the 6th Edition edited by his son Anthony (H.W. has since left us) but Great Buy Books in Washington State had it in hardcover for...ONE DOLLAR. It took me over a month to decide that this might not be the latest version, but it's the book of my childhood on sale for a buck. Further investigation showed they also had "Strangely Enough" so that's been added. Total damages: $7.25. Since we're all on the west coast, I'm hoping to get my box by Saturday.
This kind of book shopping could NEVER have been done without the Web. Sieg WWW!
