I knew Rivera (who's deleted his LJ and says he's sticking with MySpace, even though LJ WILL catch up with MySpace and be more user-friendly doing it) was a big fan of the Rat. Today I received some things via UPS, namely "Warriors of God", which he wanted to send my way, one of the "Hellblazer" hardcovers, "Clone Wars Vol. 2", which I'll watch ASAP (the movie "Donnie Darko" should be coming in this afternoon, so I am going to watch that as soon as I lay hands on it)...

...and a kukri (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/kukri).

It's not an antique one, or one made in Nepal, but a modern one, all black, in a web sheath. I've never had so nice a knife, and Steve wants me to take it to Iraq with me if/when I go, which I assured him I would. Thing is, I don't know how to care for it properly, much less use it. [profile] electorprince?

N.B. [profile] americanstd does know somewhat how to use it, and will show me what he knows. [profile] electorprince is king of the really-sharp knives though.

It's "All His Engines", yes.

Point of information directed towards the speaker. . .

Kukri knives are against regulations and won't be permitted in theater. The only guys to get away with that kind of thing were the ones in on the initial assault. If you try and pack it away, they'll find it and confiscate it. Yes, it's bullshit, but the rule of thumb for weapons that aren't issued to you, in particular blades, is that if the blade is longer than the palm of your hand is wide, it's a no-go. I, for one, am still trying to figure out a way to weasel a mace as Humvee BII. Were I you, I would leave it at home.

Care and feeding: Buck honing oil and a good dual-grain stone.

I'm not one who claims "rules are meant to be broken" so you don't need to worry about me even thinking about smuggling in contraband. But yes, that is bullshit. Steve really liked the idea of me carrying that thing. He has a bunch of questions about what you can and can't have; I have told him that he *is* allowed to ask you directly.

Re: care and feeding: Once these items are obtained I need to be shown how to properly use them. In the meantime, the weapon sits beside my bed with me looking at it with a bemused expression on my face. I appreciate the gift but I'm not sure why it was given to me.

I gave Dave a hand-forged daikatana as a wedding gift. To me, there's nothing more sincere than the gift of steel; not only does it show a level of faith and trust in the person to whom its being given to know that they won't slight it on their honor, but I also consider it a sign that the one receiving it will know when and where to use it and for what purpose. Battle-ready steel, in my little twist of the universe, is second only to love, and they're both extremely similar in behavior.

The Steve is welcome to inquire as he wishes. I will be as forthcoming with answers as possible. I, for one, always thought you should get bonus points for providing your own weaponry when going into a combat zone, but the Army has simply refused to see my point of view on the matter. Pity, that.
