thoughts contingent on the day
Sep. 11th, 2003 05:09 pmThe Almighty Sporkgoddess already posted her thoughts on September 11. It was red white and blue day at her school, and she felt that that should be given to other days, such as December 7, too.
I'm happy to say that at work, the only mention of it was from Mustafa. "Did you guys realize it's September 11?" he asked. "What do you want me to do about it?" I asked.
All told, I think things were kept in perspective. This isn't something that should be forgotten. However, I was braced for lots of breast-beating, wailing, and gnashing of teeth. It didn't happen. There was a memorial at the sites of the attacks, which is appropriate and right, but otherwise, people seem to have moved on with their lives. If you actually LOST someone, it's different of course, but I'm of the opinion that if you did not, and carry on, you're just letting the terrorists win.
My uncle Michael worked 2 blocks from Ground Zero, my friend Jim worked near the UN, and we didn't know where my dad was for some hours on that day. A year later I was horrified to see at a local K-Mart a display of lights, gifts, and decorations for the anniversary. I guess that went over like a lead zeppelin, for no such exploitation showed up this year. It's a day of commemoration, not a holiday for pete's sake.
On a lighter note, I found out that the boyz at work are fans of the Americanized animes such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokemon, and Zoids. Trini spent about an hour surfing Everquest sites as he talked on the phone, looking for a screensaver. All the ones he liked were too "boob-y" for work as I put it, but inside I was beaming.
Tonight is the Anime Meetup. Thanks to Taxlady for turning me on to this site: http://www.meetup.com. I'll let people know how it goes; I'll be wearing my Jion pendant.
