lady_kishiria: (horrors!)

The recent meme with [profile] americanstd reminded me of a question I wanted to ask people, namely, what is the worst pop song EVER? My guess is "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. Just a readthrough of the lyrics should give you a good taste of its horror...

Honey
Bobby Goldsboro

[Words and Music by Bobby Russell]

See the tree, how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig
Then the first snow came
And she ran out to brush the snow away
So it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all excited
Slipped and almost hurt herself
And I laughed till I cried
She was always young at heart
Kinda dumb and kinda smart and I loved her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all Christmas Eve two years ago
And it would sure embarrass her
When I came in from workin' late
'Cause I would know
That she'd been sittin' there and cryin'
Over some sad and silly late, late show

And honey, I miss you
And I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could

She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad
But what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me
And hugged my neck
I came home unexpectedly
And caught her cryin' needlessly
In the middle of the day
And it was in the early Spring
When flowers bloom and robins sing
She went away

And honey, I miss you
And I'm bein' good
And I'd love to be with you
If only I could

One day while I was not at home
While she was there and all alone
The angels came
Now all I have is memories of Honey
And I wake up nights and call her name
Now my life's an empty stage
Where Honey lived and Honey played
And love grew up
And a small cloud passes overhead
And cries down on the flower bed
That Honey loved

And see the tree how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long
It wasn't big
And I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it, was just a twig

Almost a tie with "Honey" is "Yuba Yuba" but most residents of the US and Canada were spared that treat because it's Romanian. When I was down in Mexico in December of '04 it was the Big Hit and couldn't be escaped. Download and listen to either IF YOU DARE. Mwahahahaha.

One I never want to hear again is "Zombie" from The Cranberries; overplayed and there's something about it that's like nails on a chalkboard to me. The vast majority of Alanis songs are in the same bucket, though maybe not quite as bad.

My sister acquired a single of "Honey" when she was about seven or so, from a cousin who was getting rid of a lot of junk. She used to play it over and over and over again. God, I hate that song.

I think I deserve to hate "Baby Mama" from Fantasia Barrino. I listened to an R&B station for the most part of last year while I was working temp jobs. It was likely because that R&B station would play the same 5 songs every hour in the same order. It was so regular that I could time myself at work to it. Even that Ludacris song in which he calls out "Mr. O'Reilly" started grating on my nerves after awhile.

I'd have to vote for "Close to You" by The Carpenters.

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?

On the day that you were born
and the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around

On the day that you were born
and the angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust
in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around

Yeah, that one does indeed suck. In fact, most of the Carpenters' oeuvre should be rounded up and burned. Except for anything with Karen drumming; for all her problems, she was a bitching drummer.

"Pop" has become such a nebulous descriptor nowadays, so I'm going to excise anything post-1995 from the list. In that light, I think my vote would go to. . .

"What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes

25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this
Brotherhood of man
For whatever that means
So I cry somethimes when I'm lying in bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then I start feeling a little peculiar
So I wake in the morning and I step
Outside I take deep breath
I get real high
Then I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And I try, oh my God do I try
I try all the time
In this institution
And I pray, oh my God do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution
So I cry sometimes when I'm lying in my bed
To get it all out what's in my head
Then I start feeling a little peculiar
So I wake in the morning and I step outside
I take a deep breaththen I get real high
Then I scream from the top of my lungs
What's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
And I say hey what's goin' on
And I say hey...
I said hey what's goin' on
25 years of my life and still
I'm trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I don't know if I've ever heard that one. If it's from the 80s I probably missed it due to my interest in New Wave.

I utterly despise the song "Roundabout" by Yes. I really dislike prog rock anyway, but this particular tune just irritates the fuck out of me.

I hate every single song by Trapt. That guys voice is just...annoying. Unlike Bono who has a really nice voice, or Trenty-sama who is just plain sexy (shaved head or not), or Kurt Cobain, this Trapt guy has a HORRIBLE voice.
