Sep. 13th, 2003 10:55 amSo I started at a prison ministry conference here this morning and walked out. My big thing is literacy, and this was all oriented towards giving religious services and doing some outreach. I'm not interested in that. I don't care if a prisoner finds his or her spirituality in Islam, the main thing is to get them to make a choice towards being a better and more responsible person. To this end, we need to teach people, especially prisoners, but people in general, to think. Books give ideas, thoughts, and inner freedom. Religious services without inner freedom just provide diversion, some entertainment.
"Bible studies aren't very helpful to people who can't read," I said to the guy who does ministry over in Juvenile Hall. He didn't understand what I meant. No wonder recidivism is high.
