MS Igloo!!!!!!
Jan. 31st, 2006 12:29 pmSo Steve got "Mobile Suit Gundam: MS Igloo" for me. Unfortunately, the subtitles were in Italian (we'll keep looking for some in English) but it was an interesting view anyway.
The CGI looks good, if a little stiff. Not up to SquarEnix quality, but not bad. The battles look neat, although Steve squawked (justifiably) that the Zeon were fighting as if they were 18th century British ships of the line, which makes no sense in a 3-D combat situation. And we got to see Char Aznable wipe out his five Feddie ships at the battle of Loum.
Enjoyable, but the massive retconning got on my nerves. For instance, every time we see the Zeon animated anew, their uniforms drift further and further from the venerable design worn by Garma Zabi and Anavel Gato. The captain of Oliver May's ship is wearing a tunic-and-jacket combination similar to the one Delaz wore in "0083". While I can accept that perhaps they were changing the officers' uniform at the end of 0079 and that's why we never saw it previously, I can't accept that it would be going into service at the beginning of the year.
But what REALLY sends me up a wall is the constant and increasing Germanification of Zeon. There was the barest whiff in the original series, mostly just the "Sieg Zeon!" catchphrase, and it was completely absent in "Zeta Gundam". It's been increasing through the OVAs. The original series had Zeon ships with either nonsense names (Doroa, Dolos), or place names (Zanzibar) or historical names (Magellan). "Igloo" would have you thinking they all had German names. With "Igloo" I figure they might as well just say that the official language of Zeon is German, even ifit would make no sense to do so; the population of Side 3 is too large to consist of nothing but ethnic Germans.

electorprince, please make Dietrich and Siegfried stop giggling before Duarte, Chavez, and the gang start throwing tequila bottles.)

Date: 2006-01-31 10:07 pm (UTC)The one ep of MS IGLOO I saw about a billion years ago sent me into convulsions of "What the fsck?" I don't know if I want to watch anymore (although it has a fair soundtrack).
I seriously think that the Japanese / anime directors / people in anime / etc have an ongoing fascination of/with Germany / German history.
