He presents a signing statement in which he asserts the government's right to open mail without a warrant.

I pray to God the Supreme Court stomps on this and soon.

His signing statements alone are proof that he's evil.

Hey, jackass, you know what, when you sign the bill into law, that means you have to faithfully uphold the whole thing, not just the parts you like. The Supreme Court's job is to decide how constitutional it is--your job is to shut the fuck up and execute it. You know, executive branch and all that.

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] knightofravens about this yesterday, because Mom and I had shipped out a package to him and his family through the USPS on December 18th, which still hasn't arrived there yet as far as I know...and considering that that statement was signed two days after the package was sent, it's got me a bit worried.

But then again, I don't know what threat sending a metal candle holder, 2nd Edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons books, or a Power Ranger action figure to the UK could pose to national security. Maybe they're afraid we godless heathen liberals (yup, Mom is just about as liberal as I am) are teaching those British to be violent, satanic pyromaniacs so that they can invade America and take their colonies back? *shrug*

Well shit. And you have to know that they are probably already doing this. They just wanted the paperwork to make it legal...

So, just to get it sorted out, they can tap your phone, they can activate your "OnStar" car mic, they have access to the last 3 months of your internet data, and they can read your mail. Did I miss something?

It's a signing statement -- they've got absolutely zero basis in law, and he can say what he wants, if he actually comes down to trying to do it, he should (rightfully) be smacked into the stone age for it. Signing statement != executive order and thus not a legally binding thing :)
