Feb. 25th, 2004 01:40 pmEverybody is asking me, seeing as I'm a theologian, if I'm going to go see the movie "The Passion of the Christ".
The answer is, "Absolutely not". The reasons are twofold. One's really basic; I have no interest in subjecting myself to two and a half hours of gory sadism. I don't seek out slasher movies, period. The fact that this one is about one of the key figures of my life doesn't change that.
Second, I am not willing to put money in Mel Gibson's pocket. He's not a Catholic per se; he is a member of a schism group that rejects all the changes that brought the Church into the 20th century. It also is very much in love with anti-Semitism. Mel himself won't answer questions about whether or not he thinks the Jews are responsible for killing Jesus. I'll take that as a "yes".
What this all means that Mel Gibson's religious beliefs and mine are not at all compatible and I won't contribute to his group. I'm sure they wouldn't want my heathen godless money anyway.

History according to Mel.

It's nice to make history accessible to the masses, but really it doesn't need to be rewritten folks. Mr. Gibson would have us believe that his protagonists in Braveheart and The Patriot were different from how even historical records present them. It's hollywood painting a very different picture from reality. Am I going to waste my time watching another piece of fiction, based upon the beliefs of someone who sculpts the world to his own design?
No.
But I'm sure that God (wherever S/He is) will forgive him.
Speaking of forgiveness

30 years son, 30 years.
