So I herd you liek Great Big Sea. Or Ashley MacIsaac. Or dare I say it, Squeeze of Scotch. Well then, doff your fisherman's cap before their ancestor, Figgy Duff! I saw this video exactly ONCE on MuchMusic in the late 80s and spent years and years trying to track them down via this one song. I eventually did and have two CDs by them. This is the video that started me on the quest, haunted as I was by the image of the late Noel Dinn playing bodhran. It was also years before someone got this video on YouTube:

Are you familiar with Hedningarna? Finnish/Swedeish folk band with violins, key harps breaking all the folk rules? If you're not familiar go search 'em out, I think you will be pleased.

Paul Gross paid them homage as well; he included two of their songs in a Due South episode (The Gift of the Wheelman).

Yes, I remember that. However they're almost unknown in the States, and sadly can never re-unite because of the death of their frontman. Although Pamela might be able to move into that slot; I don't think Noel sang that often.

Most who have a a deep interest in Celtic music of a Canadian flavour know Figgy Duff. Every good Canadian act owes them a debt of breaking the field open, and many acknowledge it. I've heard GBS mention them in concert.

Figgy Duff and Stan Rogers are two of the giants of folk music in Canada that are largely unknown outside of Canada and die-hard fans of the genre.
