Now, why is it that on TV you can constantly make fun of Catholics (look at Family Guy where every time there's a priest you know he's a child molester) Jews (again, Family Guy a prime offender) and a whole Bill Maher movie has been devoted to insulting religious people, but whenever anything Muslim appears in popular culture, "OH NOES, MUSTN'T OFFEND THE MUSLIMS!!!!!!"

The mealy-mouthed response is, "But they might get violent."

So what? People get violent and froggy in this country every day, and we have this thing called police to take them and put them in jail. I suggest we make use of them.

Agreed. The same people I know who would side against the game company wouldn't hesitate to label all Catholics as sexual perverts.

Ugh, that was my reaction when I saw this too. It's ridiculous.

It's also a video game for cryin' out loud. If there was something that Christians found offensive in it we'd probably be told to "lighten up" if we complained, but if it offends Muslims, it automatically gets edited.

Bah.

What strikes me as ironic about this case of self-censorship is that no Muslims have actually complained about the game. The censorship is happen on the presupposition that Muslims get be annoyed and get violent.

I suppose it sucks that Catholics get made fun of on Family Guy (though that might stop happening if Catholics stopped watching Family Guy), but at least they (Catholics) aren't considered terrorists.

I'd chalk it up to the whole "A-rabs! Fear them! Fear them! And then vote for us" culture we've got floating around. Nobody gave a damn about the Muslims before a handful of their crazy Saudi brothers went apeshit on the World Trade Center and we were instructed to be afraid.

I'm sure if a bunch of crazy Jews hijacked a plane and crashed it into a skyscraper, Family Guy would stop making fun of them, and we would all be instructed to be afraid of the Jews too (although on the plus side, this would mean the destruction of Joe Lieberman, so it's a tougher choice than you'd think).

It's stupid, but people are stupid, so logically, if society is the result of a conglomeration of people, it cannot possibly be anything but stupid.

Actually reading the text... there's nothing in here about mocking religious people, but about a serious flaw in the production process of this video game. Whomever was supposed to authorize music clearances should be fired for not doing their job. And probably will be.

This is a UK based game developer, in a country with significant Muslim population. Nobody noticed this "glitch" until now? That seems unlikely.

How would you have reacted if the story had been about a video game that had been pulled because someone objected to the use of one of your prayers or hymns in the music track? I'm not trying to troll you here, just holding up a mirror. I've spent the past several years kicking my assumptions in the butt. ::smile::

In the 90s there was a (in my opinion) very good TV show called "Nothing Sacred". It showed being Catholic as being an ongoing challenge and the priest who was the main character was often frustrated and doubtful.

Bill Donohue and the Catholic League raised an ENORMOUS stink and the show got pulled.

So I would react quite badly because I DETEST the Catholic League and what they stand for.

Yeesh, pulled for excessive realism? They must have burst a collective blood vessel over FATHER TED.

Oh but you must realize, to the Catholic League (which as far as I can tell consists of Bill Donohue and....Bill Donohue) screams blue murder if a priest is shown in a way any more edgy than in "Going My Way".

This icon would even piss them off.

Oh, and about mockery ... Bill Maher insults Muslims too, to be fair.

I'm not Catholic but I wanted to commit some slappage on the makers of ABC series PUSHING DAISIES last week, about a very silly depiction of convent life including really BAD habits -- in the costuming sense. ::eyeroll::

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with this argument on the grounds that you are comparing two very unlike things.

Family Guy is a TV show designed to entertain, in part, by offending people.
Little Big Planet is a game designed to entertain by providing interesting "jump puzzles".

I think Sony may have over-reacted, but I also believe they would have delayed this title if it contained any hidden Jewish or Catholic content.

I'm not saying that your rant is unjust, just that I believe it is misdirected.
