Interesting news in the same-sex marriage front

Congress has to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell, but DoD teachers' relationships are recognized by the DoD....

For those who don't know, the Department of Defense has its own educational system for military brats.

... I would be happy about this, and maybe it's just my hormones, but at the moment all I can think is something to the tune of "The US government is going to stop blatantly violating people's rights in one small way? And they want what, me to congratulate them?"

I'm all out of happy for things that should have happened thirty years ago, tbh.

Thirty years ago isn't a long time. Ask [profile] cinchntouch about 30 years ago. Even in 1988 being gay in the D.C. Metro area was freakish. Now it's as outre as being left-handed. Back then, if you wanted to get out of the military, all you had to do was say "I'm gay". You'd be beaten up horribly and discharged. Now if you say "I'm gay," you need to be prepared to back that statement up before you can be discharged. Trust me, this is like going from prop planes to launching satellites. Not quite walking on the moon yet.

I realize that this is a huge victory. I'm pissed that it has to be in 2010, I'm pissed that it would have been in 1988, and I'm pissed that it should ever be a fucking victory to decide to treat people like human beings at fucking all.

And I am making my icon's face for unrelated reasons and probably should stop.
