The title is misleading. Yes, the Repugs are trying to keep women out of combat (which we're not officially supposed to be sent into anyway, but if the bad guys start firing, the bad guys start firing) which is in my opinion offensive and ridiculous. Why is my body more precious than [profile] thincat's or Shadow's just because it doesn't have the same reproductive organs? Some would give me the "potential mother" line but sorry Charlie, I'm 40 and that dog won't even BEGIN to hunt with me. But what are they supposed to do, keep women quartermasters from delivering materials to Falluja? Go ahead, make the job harder! Fucking Repugs.

However I call attention to the paragraph stating that the House bill intends to extend health benefits full time to Reservists. This of course interests me very much. I'm trying to find out what Congresscritters I need to contact to encourage this behaviour.

Well, because you know they might be raped or something. Not that the same can't happen to men...

So? I know that [personal profile] caprine heard a speaker say that female prisoners of war get raped to death, but I haven't been able to find anything to back that up. Certainly it hasn't happend since before Gulf War I.

You know what I call that, I call that projection. Case in point: Abu Ghraib.

Despite the Pentagon's best efforts to say otherwise, it's been widely proven that Jessica Lynch was not analy raped and was treat rather well by her captors.

Even the incident with the downed helicopter pilot during the 1st Gulf War wasn't rape. Sexual battery, perhaps, but the farthest the Iraqi soldier got with her was a feel of the hair and a grope of the breast. I remember seeing an interview with her in a Gulf War retrospective, and she actually remarked on the incident as some sort of humorous ancedote.

I did a HUGE post back when the Jessica Lynch story broke about what it said about sexism and racism. I'll see if I can track it down because no, she wasn't raped. I concluded that this was another thing to get women to keep from recruiting using the threat of the Big Brown Man.

Mine was intended to be sarcastic. I have the utmost respect for women who serve.

And the idiot behind this abomination??

East county's own Duncan Hunter. The jackass that I have the misfortune to have representing my district. (rolls eyes) It's amazing how East County keeps getting hookwinked into voting against their own best interests. Especially since he does jackshit to help East County because he'd rather make a name for himself nationally.

I have heard so many different reasons for why women aren't allowed in combat situations, from the fact that they will get pregnant to the fact that the menstruate, but I suspect the real reason is just ... that they're women.

Word. And it's not like other industrialized countries don't do it.

[identity profile] youngfreud.livejournal.com 2005-05-19 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you don't see these neocons pressuring good 'ole buddy Israel to remove it's women from combat, which they've been doing since their inception in 1948. (trivia time: Did you know that miniature sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer served in the Haganah, the paramilitary precurssor to the modern Israeli Defense Forces? She was field medic and she even was wounded in action.)

And it's not just industrialized nations. You wouldn't believe how many Islamic countries allow women to serve in the armed forces. Just this week, there was news out of Pakistan about the first female combat pilot in their air force.

[identity profile] taxlady.livejournal.com 2005-05-20 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
In Pakistan!?! Wow!

I thought Dr. Ruth had been a sharp shooter, sort of SWAT team, in the Israeli army. I remember being boggled and blown away during the TV interview with her.

...so...since I have a penis, this means I'm supposed to go die and fill Bushy's coffers instead of you. Right. I get it now.

I was under the impression we got over this in the 90s.

This is absolutly ridiculous! So fuckin' what if I'm a girl, why does that have to mean I'm somehow inferior the the guys? Man, I sure can't wait till' we get this dumb-ass (Dubya) out of office...
